As healthcare leaders, we have a responsibility for all our employees. Environmental impacts, facility education, visitor management systems, and real-time location systems (RFID), and duress alarms are a few interventions in active research to address WPV. Utilizing a workplace violence committee is instrumental for any facility comprised of multidisciplinary staff sharing ideas and barriers to practice. Staff are looking to facility leadership to identify key aspects of de-escalation techniques and general responses to violence they can utilize to protect themselves and the patients. A triple-layer, comprehensive solution can work to help leadership create a safe and secure healthcare environment: visitor management, duress alarms, and real-time location systems (RFID) are viable options to be used and researched in different healthcare environments. As artificial intelligence (AI) embeds itself in all aspects of business and life, healthcare is uniquely positioned to utilize systems to prevent and escalate circumstances that could impact care negatively (Dowling, 2023). Staff protective systems, known as RFID, are a growing technology being studied and utilized for safety. Turku University Hospital (Tyks) in Finland, strategically decided to identify, implement and standardize staff protection technology within their facilities and have produced a case study. The unified approach helped streamline security protocols and improve staff safety by deploying over 1100 RFID and duress badges to employees. Employees alert a central center via a wearable badge at the first look of a patient becoming angry or another security situation in development. The goal is early detection and activation of a solution to support the employee (Securitas Healthcare, 2023). Visitor Management system allow for individuals entering a building to be entered into a secure system via driver’s license or passport. The system runs background on the individual alerting the facility for potential concerns. Many facilities bridge these efforts with concierge staff to welcome people to the facility and escort to the correct location. While this is a security feature, it fulfills customer service. All interventions and products considered for a quality initiative must follow a translation framework/model for successful study and implementation.
